Vietnam: Experts Urge Early Detection of Kidney Dysfunction Signs
Experts in Vietnam highlight six warning signs of potential kidney dysfunction, including lower back pain, frequent urination, dry hair, cold extremities, and disturbed sleep. Early detection and healthy lifestyle choices are emphasized.
Six warning signs that may indicate declining kidney function are being highlighted by experts in Vietnam. These include lower back pain, frequent nighttime urination, dry or prematurely graying hair, cold hands and feet, and disturbed sleep. In Vietnamese traditional medicine, the kidneys are considered the "root of life," and their dysfunction can impact overall health. Luong Y Đỗ Minh Tuấn of the Vietnam Nam Y Association explains that healthy kidneys contribute to physical resilience, mental clarity, and robust hair. Conversely, if kidney qi (vital energy) declines without timely replenishment, overall health can rapidly deteriorate. He outlines six typical signs to watch for: 1. Lower back pain and knee soreness: The lower back is closely linked to the kidneys. When kidneys are weak, the lower back may experience dull pain, and knees can feel sore or weak. Fatigue can set in quickly, even with prolonged standing or light walking. 2. Urinary disorders: Frequent urination, especially at night. Weakened kidney qi can impair the body''s ability to retain water and control excretion. While 0-1 nighttime urination is normal, more than three times warrants attention. Abnormal urine, such as excessive foam (proteinuria), dark color, or blood, can signal kidney damage. 3. Dry, brittle, or prematurely graying hair and hair loss: These symptoms can reflect weakened kidney qi. However, they may also be indicative of other underlying health issues. 4. Tinnitus, dizziness, and lightheadedness: Reduced kidney qi can lead to intermittent or persistent tinnitus, and insufficient blood to nourish the head can cause dizziness and lightheadedness. 5. Sensitivity to cold and cold extremities: A deficiency in kidney yang can reduce the body's "fire energy" for warmth. Individuals may feel cold even in mild weather, with persistently cold hands and feet, indicating a lack of energy. 6. Disturbed sleep and general weakness: Kidney damage directly affects the mind. This can manifest as difficulty falling asleep, interrupted sleep, frequent awakenings, and morning grogginess. Over time, it can lead to memory decline and mental fatigue. These symptoms are often mistaken for simple signs of aging or fatigue. Experts strongly recommend regular health check-ups and at least annual kidney screening. Self-treatment based on unverified online information should be strictly avoided. Furthermore, adopting a healthy lifestyle is crucial. This includes a balanced diet, adequate hydration, limiting salt intake, reducing processed foods and alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking. Daily exercise tailored to individual health conditions is also advised. Prompt treatment of acute conditions like respiratory infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections is essential.
