Cambodia: Emerging Crop 'Prek Kron' Becomes New Income Source for Farmers

In Kirivong District, Takeo Province, southern Cambodia, the cultivation of the emerging crop 'Prek Kron' is gaining attention among farmers as a new source of income. Amidst continuously rising demand in both domestic and international markets, this crop is becoming an economic option providing moderate income for farmers, especially those who seize opportunities and dare to try planting. Mr. Om Sophath and his wife, Ms. Hem Sreyne, farmers in Chroy Village, Preah Bat Chumnum Commune, Kirivong District, have started cultivating Prek Kron on approximately 0.5 hectares of land and have achieved satisfactory results. According to Mr. Sophath, this type of crop is easy to plant and maintain, requires a modest initial investment, but can be harvested continuously, generating regular income that helps support family expenses and improve their living standards to a certain extent. Currently, Mr. Sophath's Prek Kron products are ordered from almost every province across the country, demonstrating the potential and bright future of this crop. On the afternoon of July 21, 2026, Mr. Nguon Dina, the District Governor of Kirivong, visited the farmers' cultivation sites to understand the production situation and encourage residents to expand Prek Kron cultivation in line with increasing market demand. The District Governor praised the farmers' efforts in transforming this new crop into a significant income source for their families. He also called on residents with suitable conditions to continue studying and expanding cultivation to increase income, create local employment, and contribute to the further development of the agricultural sector in Kirivong District.
