Cambodian Workers Possess Real Skills but Lack Formal Certificates, Says Labor Union Chief

Sam Soeun, President of the National Trade Union Coalition of Cambodia, has highlighted that many Cambodian workers possess real experience and skills gained while working abroad, particularly in Thailand, but often lack formal certification. This observation was made during his visit to a skills recognition testing center in Siem Reap province. The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has organized a skills assessment and recognition program. This initiative provides former migrant workers with an opportunity to undergo skills testing to obtain official certification. Such certificates are expected to enhance their chances of securing stable employment and achieving higher incomes. This development is seen as part of the Cambodian government's broader efforts to improve the skill levels of its workforce and boost international competitiveness. Formally recognizing and utilizing the skills of individuals with overseas work experience could contribute to the upgrading of domestic industries. However, further efforts may be needed to ensure widespread access to and awareness of the official certification system among eligible workers.
