India Continues Mine Clearance Support in Cambodia, Clearing Over 160,000 sqm and Benefiting 1,400+

Cambodia and India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement a Quick Impact Project (QIP) for humanitarian mine clearance in Mol village, Rokat commune, Phnom Kravanh district, Pursat province. This project will clear approximately 163,207 square meters of hazardous land and benefit 1,403 residents, equivalent to 369 families. The MoU was signed on July 27, 2026, between H.E. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), and H.E. Vanlalvawna Bawitlung, Ambassador of India to Cambodia. The joint statement indicated that the project will help clear land threatened by mines and explosive remnants of war, allowing residents to safely use it for agricultural production, housing construction, and community development. The project also includes risk education activities on unexploded ordnance to enhance public awareness. During the signing ceremony, Ambassador Vanlalvawna Bawitlung highlighted the strong and continuous cooperation between India and Cambodia in the field of mine clearance. He noted that humanitarian mine clearance activities not only remove the dangers buried in the ground but also create opportunities for sustainable development, improve living standards, and ensure a safer and more prosperous future for local communities. H.E. Ly Thuch expressed his profound gratitude to the Government and people of India for their long-standing partnership in mine action in Cambodia. He observed that the friendship between Cambodia and India, deeply rooted in centuries of shared history and civilization, continues to flourish through practical cooperation that contributes to improving the living standards of the Cambodian people. Senior Minister Ly Thuch also lauded India's valuable humanitarian assistance to mine victims through the "India for Humanity" initiative, which has helped hundreds of landmine victims in Cambodia regain their mobility, prosperity, and opportunities to build fulfilling lives. India is a long-standing partner in humanitarian mine clearance efforts in Cambodia. Under the framework of the Quick Impact Project of Mekong-Ganga Cooperation, India and the CMAA have successfully implemented four mine clearance projects. The first project assisted in clearing four villages in Koh Kong province, benefiting over 7,000 residents. The second project in Kpo Village, Koh Kong Province, cleared approximately 197,810 square meters of threatened land, benefiting over 3,300 families. Meanwhile, another Quick Impact Project currently underway in Preah Anlong Village, Pursat Province, is progressing well and is set to clear about 200,000 square meters, directly benefiting approximately 1,000 residents.
