Na Ladprao Beer Hall Owner Charged Over Fatal Fire

Police have charged the owner of the Na Ladprao beer hall with multiple offenses following a fire that killed 37 people and injured 77. Investigators concluded the owner was responsible and forwarded the seven-volume case file to prosecutors. Suwicha Salaibat, 45, the venue owner, faces charges including reckless arson causing death, negligence causing death, negligence causing serious injury, negligence causing physical and psychological harm, and property damage. He is also charged with operating an entertainment venue without a license. Authorities believe the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit due to modifications to the venue's electrical system. Sparks ignited soundproofing materials, leading to the rapid spread of the blaze. The venue's layout also hampered evacuation efforts, with numerous tables obstructing movement and emergency exits being blocked or locked. Witness testimony from employees and customers indicated that the owner failed to implement reasonable safety precautions expected of an entertainment venue operator. Mr. Suwicha remains in intensive care and has not yet been questioned. His four business partners were questioned but no evidence linked them to the venue's management. In the wake of the tragedy, city authorities have intensified safety inspections of entertainment venues across Bangkok. Between July 19 and Aug 4, 948 establishments were inspected. Of these, 209 met safety standards, 632 were ordered to make improvements, and 107 were ordered to cease operations. Officials stated that operators would be given opportunities to rectify non-critical deficiencies, while serious violations would face legal action.
