Chiang Rai Artists Transform Kad Luang Market into a Canvas
Chiang Rai's historic Kad Luang market is being transformed into a creative tourism hub through the "Pa Kad Vol.2" festival, blending contemporary art with tradition. Over 40 artists are participating, turning the entire market into an art space.
Chiang Rai is transforming its historic Kad Luang municipal market into a vibrant creative tourism destination with the "Pa Kad Vol.2" festival. Governor Chucheep Pongchai recently visited the site, supporting the initiative to infuse the century-old market with contemporary art and creative energy. The festival's name, "Pa Kad," combines Northern Thai words for "to meet" and "market," symbolizing a space for gathering, connection, and idea sharing. The project aims to seamlessly integrate modern art into the daily lives of local market vendors. Organized by the Everywhere Gallery network, the festival operates on the principle that "everywhere is a gallery," emphasizing art's direct connection with society. It builds upon the legacy of the globally recognized Thailand Biennale in Chiang Rai. Over 10 days, visitors can explore more than 30 unique art exhibitions by over 40 talented artists. The event features striking street art, creative photo spots, and a special "Made in Kad Luang" food menu. Guided tours on traditional carts and creative workshops in historic shophouses are also offered. Beyond visual appeal, the festival includes over 20 live performances as part of the Chiang Rai Street Show, bringing the historic market to life. These range from stage plays and outdoor movies to singing contests, fashion shows, and energetic dance battles, offering interactive entertainment for all ages. A "Creation Kitchen" activity invites locals to share ideas for improving their beloved market. Organizers have set ambitious goals, aiming for at least 20,000 attendees and over 10 million online media impressions. Economically, the festival is projected to circulate approximately 100 million baht within the province, create at least 50 new jobs, and foster partnerships with 50 different organizations. This collaborative effort ensures tangible financial benefits for local residents. The project also focuses on developing unique "Product of Kad Luang" goods, with designers helping market vendors create sellable products while respecting their traditional way of life. Art serves as a powerful bridge connecting merchants, artists, and the younger generation. This shared creative space fosters a strong sense of community ownership and local pride. By transforming the 100-year-old market, Chiang Rai is establishing a fresh, year-round tourist attraction and solidifying its reputation as a world-class destination for modern creative tourism.
