Thai PM Welcomes Interim President Min Aung Hlaing with Military Parade Amid Protests

Despite protests and opposition from various sectors in Thailand, Interim President Min Aung Hlaing, who arrived in Thailand today, August 6, was officially welcomed with a military parade by the Thai government, including Prime Minister Anutin, it has been learned. Following the military parade welcoming Interim President Min Aung Hlaing in front of the Khun Pha building in Thailand, which will last from August 6 to 7, intergovernmental meetings and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremonies between the two countries will be held, according to the Thai news agency The Reporters. Thai Prime Minister Anutin and Interim President Min Aung Hlaing began informal discussions, and in the afternoon, meetings will continue with full delegations from both countries at the Thai Government House in Bangkok. Following this, signing of bilateral agreements, exchange of Memoranda of Understanding (MOU), and support ceremonies are scheduled to be held at the Friendship Building of the Government House. On the other hand, 16 Thai civil society organizations issued a joint statement yesterday, August 5, demanding the immediate cancellation of Interim President Min Aung Hlaing's visit to Thailand and that it not be given official recognition. The civil society groups, led by Solidarity Collective TH and SEM, pointed out to the Thai government that Interim President Min Aung Hlaing's administration is committing acts of violence against the people, systematic human rights violations, and war crimes, and urged the government to halt policies that benefit them. Furthermore, Thai Member of Parliament Kannavi Suppasan urged the Thai Prime Minister to cancel the visit, stating that the interim government has not complied with the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus and continues to bomb civilians.
