Cambodian Journalist Arrested on Defamation and Incitement Charges; Environment Ministry Refutes Claims

In the Val Veng district of Poipet province, western Cambodia, journalist Proeuk Siek has been arrested on charges of defamation and incitement to public discrimination. He is accused of posting content on Facebook pages, including "UMA_TV_Online_News," that incited discrimination against public officials and damaged their reputation. According to local police, Siek's arrest followed complaints filed by public official Chea Dara (37) and farmer Mom Kim Heng (43). Both individuals claimed that a video posted on September 13, 2024, contained content that incited discrimination against them and defamed their character. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment in Poipet province has vehemently denied claims made by Siek's wife on Facebook that ministry officials arrested her husband and held him in a wildlife sanctuary. The ministry stated that Siek's arrest was carried out by the Val Veng district police and that no ministry officials were involved. Furthermore, the Ministry of Environment refuted reports by another Facebook page, "Bandat Neak Neayom Thmey," alleging that a deputy district governor in the area was illegally developing land within a wildlife sanctuary. The ministry explained that an on-site investigation on July 25, 2024, confirmed that the land in question had been cultivated for a long time and did not involve new deforestation or land development.
