In Can Tho City, southern Vietnam, a high-speed boat service for tourists, known as "vỏ lãi bay," has been temporarily suspended due to significant concerns regarding water traffic safety. This service, characterized by boats traveling at speeds of 30-50 km/h through canals and waterways, had attracted curiosity after videos of it went viral on social media. However, authorities quickly intervened, recognizing the potential risks to water traffic safety and the increased likelihood of accidents. Mr. Tran Long Ho, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thoi Lai Commune, confirmed the presence of some operators using high-speed boats to transport tourists. He noted that this activity poses a direct threat to the lives and health of residents. Consequently, local authorities, in coordination with the police, have ordered two businesses to cease their operations. Authorities have also guided the operators to comply with proper procedures, including vehicle registration and business licensing. A representative from the Can Tho City Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism explicitly stated that no permits have been issued for this spontaneous, hazardous, and unsafe tourism service.
