Laos Consumer Prices Rise 3.1% in August Driven by Fuel and Mobile Fees

According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Data and Statistics, Laos' consumer price index (CPI) rose by 3.1 percent year-on-year in August, an acceleration from the 2.8 percent increase recorded in July. The primary drivers behind this price hike were elevated oil prices and a rebound in mobile subscription fees. Oil prices increased by 14.2 percent in August compared to the previous year, although the growth rate slowed from 15.6 percent in July. The rise in oil prices contributed 0.54 percentage points to the overall CPI growth. Specifically, diesel prices surged by 19.6 percent and gasoline prices advanced by 11.5 percent. Another significant factor was the 26.7 percent increase in mobile phone service charges. This rise is attributed to a low base effect from the previous year, when major telecommunications providers offered substantial discounts following a large-scale data breach. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also saw a notable increase, rising 3.4 percent year-on-year in August. This marks the highest level since May 2023. Overall industrial product prices increased by 3.7 percent year-on-year. Conversely, prices for agricultural, livestock, and fishery products fell by 2.6 percent, influenced by lower prices for napa cabbage and tomatoes. Prices in the service sector rose by 3.7 percent, with higher insurance premiums and overseas package tour prices increasing by 13.4 percent and 14.9 percent, respectively. Prices for electricity, gas, and water saw a marginal increase of 0.4 percent. Laos relies heavily on imports for its energy needs, making its economy particularly susceptible to fluctuations in global energy prices.
