Operating an unauthorized taxi service without permission from the Land Transport Department is strictly prohibited. Furthermore, driving a commercial vehicle for hire is a job legally reserved only for Thai citizens. Any foreign national caught waiting to pick up passengers faces a strict fine of 5,000 baht. If they cannot pay, they will serve up to ten nights in jail to cover the fine. Border authorities recently established clear guidelines for how cross-border passenger transport must operate moving forward. Drivers from neighboring countries are still allowed to bring passengers across the border into Thailand safely. However, they must return home immediately without waiting around to find new customers for the trip back. This swift crackdown has brought immense relief to Thai residents who rely on these busy roads daily. For the last couple of years, the growing number of foreign taxis had made the situation unbearable.
