High School Student Dives into River to Rescue Two Younger Siblings Despite Not Knowing How to Swim

In Hai Xuan commune, Ninh Thuan province, a high school student displayed remarkable courage by diving into a river to rescue two younger siblings, despite not knowing how to swim. The incident occurred around 11:15 AM on September 24, near the Múc River in Hai Xuan commune. Nguyen Manh Hung, an 11th-grade student, was on his way home from school when he spotted the young siblings struggling in the water. Hung first pulled the younger sibling, who was sinking, to the shore, and then returned to rescue the other. The rescued siblings, a first-grader and a sixth-grader from Hai Xuan Primary and Secondary Schools, explained that they fell into the river with their bicycle after colliding with a truck while heading home from school. "I don't know how to swim, but at that moment, the road was empty and there was no one around. Seeing the children in danger, I only thought that I had to save them..." Hung recounted, noting that the river in that section was as deep as his neck. Earlier that afternoon, the Chairman of the Hai Xuan Commune People's Committee presented Hung with a special commendation certificate for his courageous act. Nguyen Van Tuan, principal of Hai Hau High School where Hung studies, praised the student's actions as "a beautiful act of responsibility and compassion, befitting young students." The school also plans to commend Hung and propose him for recognition by the education sector.
