New Traditional Art Space in Hanoi Blends Heritage with Contemporary Flair

A new cultural experience space, CADAO Collective, has opened in the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam, dedicated to showcasing traditional arts with a contemporary twist. On the evening of July 10, a special artistic program featuring a convergence of Vietnam's signature traditional art forms – water puppetry, Ca trù (ceremonial singing), and Xẩm (folk singing) – was presented, offering visitors an engaging journey through the capital's rich cultural heritage. The water puppet theatre space is designed and constructed entirely by hand, integrating elements of traditional architecture with contemporary minimalist design language, creating a performance venue that bears both the imprint of heritage and artistic highlights. Notably, "Rối Show" is linked to the activities of the Tay Ho Puppet Troupe, the sixth such troupe within the inner city. The puppet program is set to be innovated monthly, with research, creativity, and consultation from experts such as Meritorious Artist Chu Luong, former Director of Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre; Director, Master of Stage Arts, Meritorious Artist Bui Quang Van; along with artisans and artists from traditional puppet troupes. Alongside water puppetry, visitors can "touch" the soul of Hanoi with "Ca trù Show." Performances are presented in the elegant singing style that retains the academic characteristics of this art form, considered "not for the masses," with renditions by Meritorious Artist Thuy Hoa; Kép đàn, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Van Khue; drum artist Nguyen Quyet Thang, among others. Beyond creating a regular space for Ca trù performances, this venue is oriented to become a training ground for artists and a new generation of Ca trù singers, fostering a space for practice and continuation of the art form. The artistic experience also leads visitors to "Xẩm Show." Audiences can enjoy Xẩm melodies through works such as "Xẩm 36 Pho Phuong" (Xẩm of 36 Streets and Lanes), "Vui Nhat Co Cho Dong Xuan" (Most Joyful is Dong Xuan Market), "Xẩm Diêm Huê," and "Mục Hạ Vô Nhân" (No One Under the Tree), performed by artists like People's Artist Xuan Hoach; Master of Arts, Artisan Ta Hanh; and artist Tran Koong. Significantly, beyond offering a space to appreciate traditional art, the program opens up an experiential zone where audiences can directly converse and interact with seasoned artisans to understand cultural stories spanning centuries and personally touch the musical instruments that contribute to the ethnic sounds, such as the dan day, dan bau, trong chau, nhi, and phach. The artistic program combining "Rối Show," "Xẩm Show," and "Ca trù Show" also marks the debut of the CADAO Collective space – a new destination for experiencing traditional art in the heart of the capital. Mr. Ta Trung Dung, Artistic Director and Chairman of the Tay Ho Puppet Troupe, stated: "At CADAO Collective, we aim to create a new destination with the spirit of the times through cultural assimilation and foster a sense of community for traditional cultural activities. Especially, thanks to the close support and companionship of seasoned artisans, artists, and cultural experts, this journey of assimilation and heritage inheritance will always be carried out in a methodical, sustainable, and vibrant manner."
