Lam Dong Province Declares Emergency Over Landslides and Subsidence in Dak Snao Hamlet

Lam Dong Province, located in Vietnam's Central Highlands, declared an emergency on September 20th following a severe landslide and land subsidence incident in Dak Snao Hamlet, Quang Son Commune. The Provincial People's Committee officially announced the situation through Decision No. 4620/QĐ-UBND on the same day. Recent heavy rainfall has caused significant land subsidence and landslides in the area. The subsidence has reached an average depth of approximately 20cm, and cracks have appeared along the hillsides and residential areas, stretching for about 300 meters. These fissures range from 6cm to 17cm in width and are rapidly expanding, affecting over 4 hectares of land. The disaster directly impacts the lives of 79 households, comprising 454 residents. The ground is in a state of extreme instability. Should heavy rains continue, the risk of widespread landslides and collapses is very high, posing a direct threat to the lives and property of the local population. Vietnam's single-party system has prioritized economic development, which has driven growth, but in some areas, infrastructure and environmental protection measures have lagged. Mountainous regions and riverbanks are particularly vulnerable to increased natural disaster risks, exacerbated by extreme weather events linked to climate change. The situation in Lam Dong highlights the critical need to balance development with environmental conservation.
