Detained Aung San Suu Kyi meets Red Cross official in Myanmar: junta media

Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi met with the nation’s International Committee of the Red Cross representative on Monday morning, the first publicised meeting between the detained ex-democratic leader and a foreign official since the democratically-elected leader was ousted in a 2021 military coup. “Mr. Arnaud de Baecque, the Resident Representative of the ICRC to Myanmar, met with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi this morning,” said a statement from the Myanmar president’s office and reported by MRTV’s Telegram channel. “The meeting took place this morning,” a member of the government’s information team told BBC Burmese. The announcement of the Myanmar military junta was accompanied by photographs of the meeting, as well as two commemorative photographs taken on Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday on 19 June. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has not yet issued a public statement regarding the meeting, but it confirmed to the BBC Burmese that the meeting had taken place. Aung San Suu Kyi has been kept in detention by the military junta since the February 2021 coup. The visit addresses mounting public and international anxiety surrounding the physical condition of the 81-year-old leader, following extended isolation and calls for a verified “proof of life”.
