Loy Krathong Traditions and Environmental Concerns: Thai Authorities Issue Warnings

As the Loy Krathong festival approaches in November, preparations for crafting traditional krathongs are underway across Thailand. The festival, known for the beautiful spectacle of floating krathongs on rivers and canals to convey wishes, has faced environmental concerns in recent years. Traditionally, krathongs are made from a round slice of banana trunk, covered with banana leaves, and decorated with flowers, candles, and incense sticks. The use of banana leaves is considered environmentally friendly as they naturally decompose. However, krathongs made from bread and Styrofoam have become popular due to their convenience. Thai authorities have specifically warned about bread-based krathongs, noting that uneaten bread can lead to water pollution. Bangkok's Department of Environment and the Thailand Environment Institute have identified bread krathongs as a significant cleanup issue, comparable to plastic waste. In one recent year, over 500,000 krathongs were collected in Bangkok alone, with many of them being bread-based. Banana leaves remain the top recommended material for their biodegradability. Ice krathongs, made by freezing water with flowers inside a bowl, are also gaining traction as a strong alternative, as they dissolve completely, leaving no residue. Authorities are also encouraging families to share a single krathong to reduce the total number floated. The Loy Krathong festival is a vital celebration symbolizing Thai culture and spirituality, and there is a growing call for increased awareness regarding its sustainability throughout Thai society.
