Hanoi Mandates Stricter School Lunch Safety Amidst Parental Concerns

Following feedback and proposals from some parents regarding school lunches, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has issued a directive to the People's Committees of districts, communes, and directly managed educational institutions on strengthening the management of school lunches for the 2026-2027 academic year. The directive clearly states that demands for food safety must not be overlooked due to progress requirements for meals. The Hanoi Municipal Party Committee's Standing Board has issued an "urgent directive" on school lunches for students. This indicates that the authorities are responding to reports and parental feedback concerning the quality of meals in some schools. Specifically, the city authorities have requested a clarification regarding reports of substandard school lunches at Trung Gia Primary School. School lunches involve multiple levels of responsibility. Educational institutions, suppliers, and supervisory authorities must collaborate to protect students' health. Hanoi plans to introduce new monitoring methods to oversee the quality of school lunches, a measure intended to restore parental confidence in the safety and nutritional value of meals, ensuring students can attend school with peace of mind. Under Vietnam's one-party system, safety management in education is considered a key responsibility of the government. Especially with rapid economic growth, expectations for improving the quality of life are rising, making child health a top priority. Furthermore, in the context of relations with China, strengthening domestic foundations is crucial from the perspective of supply chain stability and economic security, with the development of educational infrastructure being part of this effort.
