Phnom Penh's Por Sen Chey District Undertakes Drainage System Rehabilitation to Combat Flooding

In Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, drainage system rehabilitation efforts are underway as part of measures to combat flooding during the rainy season. On September 15, 2026, under the direction of Pang Lida, Deputy Governor of Por Sen Chey District, along with Va Savoeun, Commune Chief of Choeung Chov 3, and Stuot Sujath, Deputy Commune Chief of the same commune, a team collaborated with a drainage pump vehicle from the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration. They conducted cleaning and expansion of drainage channels to facilitate faster water flow. This work took place along the Russian Federation Boulevard, near Prey Tea 1 and Prey Tea 2 villages. According to Va Savoeun, in previous rainy seasons, water drainage was slow after each rainfall, impacting residents' lives. This rehabilitation initiative, led by Pang Lida, involved the deployment of a drainage pump vehicle from the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration and the involvement of specialists to widen the drainage openings, thereby accelerating water flow and ensuring quicker water recedes. Additionally, efforts are being made to clean and enhance the drainage capacity of underground sumps beneath the Choeung Chov flyover. Va Savoeun expressed gratitude on behalf of the Choeung Chov 3 Commune Administration to the Governor of Phnom Penh, Sam Piseth, Director of the Department of Public Works and Transport, the working team, and Sok Chankalith, Governor of Por Sen Chey District, for their timely provision of the drainage pump vehicle. This drainage system upgrade is part of urban infrastructure development aimed at directly improving residents' quality of life. Phnom Penh has seen instances where existing infrastructure struggles to keep pace with rapid urbanization. Flooding during the rainy season, in particular, disrupts transportation networks and causes damage to homes, significantly affecting citizens' daily lives. Therefore, such infrastructure improvements are considered urgent priorities. The current initiative in Por Sen Chey District is drawing attention as a response to these challenges.
