Phnom Penh Authorities Intensify Crackdown on Online Scams, Arrest Three Chinese Suspects
Phnom Penh authorities have intensified their crackdown on online scams, uncovering two cases in Sen Sok district and arresting three Chinese suspects. A total of 61 locations were inspected, and numerous electronic devices were seized. This operation was conducted under the direct leadership and command of H.E. Khuong Sreng, Governor of Phnom Penh and Chairman of the Phnom Penh Municipal Unity Command. During the operation on the afternoon of July 16, two criminal cases involving online scams were identified, and three suspects were arrested. They were sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Commissioner's Office for further legal proceedings. Ms. Doan Samphos, Deputy Director of Administration and Spokesperson for the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration, provided details on the two locations: 1. The first location, at shophouse No. G-13, Goody Street, within the Rattanaplaz Market area, Chong Thnal East Village, Sangkat Teuk La’ak, Sen Sok District, resulted in the arrest of one Chinese national. Seized items included: 8 boxes of keyboards, 19 boxes of motherboards, 2 boxes of network devices, 4 boxes of telephones, 5 boxes of laptops, and 4 boxes of all-in-one adapters and phones. 2. The second location, at Borey Kanadya, House No. D21, Dealnes Street, Trup Moan Village, Sangkat Ou Bek Kdam, Sen Sok District, led to the arrest of two Chinese nationals. Seized items included: 1,740 mobile phones, 11 all-in-one computers, a quantity of SIM cards and mobile phone spare parts, and one white Prius car. According to preliminary assessments by officials from the Department of Technology Crime Prevention, these locations are suspected of storing and supplying equipment used for online scams. The arrested Chinese suspects and the seized evidence have been transferred to the Department of Technology Crime Prevention of the General Commissariat of the National Police for further legal proceedings.
