The An Giang Provincial Museum in southern Vietnam has opened a special exhibition titled "Colors of Southern Vietnamese Ceramics - Stories, Beliefs, and Life," featuring over 100 valuable antique ceramic artifacts. This exhibition, co-organized with the An Giang Antique Collectors Association, comprises items contributed by 52 collectors from both within and outside the province. The displayed ceramics date from the late 19th century to the latter half of the 20th century and include various representative types of Southern Vietnamese pottery, such as those from Cay Mai - Saigon, Lai Thieu, Bien Hoa, and Thanh Le. These pieces reflect the cultural life, beliefs, and artistic craftsmanship of the residents of Southern Vietnam during those periods. Particularly noteworthy are the vases, large jars (choe), plates, and altar figures, as well as ceramic paintings, which are decorated with motifs from folk tales, historical anecdotes, religious figures, and scenes of daily life. These decorations vividly recreate the cultural identity of Southern Vietnam. This exhibition can be seen as an example of how the state, under Vietnam's one-party system, is focusing on the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage. While Vietnam continues its economic growth, it also emphasizes the inheritance of traditional culture. Events like this, which introduce regional cultural heritage, are expected to enhance national identity and boost domestic tourism. Furthermore, amidst increasingly complex relations with China, Vietnam is also seen to be strengthening its national distinctiveness by re-recognizing and promoting its unique culture domestically and internationally. This ceramics exhibition can be positioned within that context as a showcase of the richness and diversity of regional culture.
