Terminal Cancer Patient in Cambodia Relies on Traditional Medicine Amidst Financial Hardship

A 42-year-old woman in Kampot province is bedridden due to advanced cancer in her left leg. She has four young children, the youngest being only one year old. Her husband, Chan Thoeun, 43, stated that he used to work as a construction worker in Sihanoukville but quit his job to care for his wife when her condition worsened. Initially, his wife sought treatment at the Kampot Provincial Hospital, but her condition did not improve. She was then brought home, and more than ten Khmer traditional healers and ancient practitioners were invited to perform rituals and treatments. However, her condition has not improved, and she continues to suffer day and night. The family is currently facing severe financial hardship, struggling to even secure daily meals. Their eldest son, aged 12, works as a fish feeder to earn 10,000 riel (approximately $2.50 USD) per day to support the family. The other children are 8, 6, and the youngest daughter is 1 year old. They lack milk and their own shelter, currently staying with the elder sister. Despite having a poverty card, the family receives a monthly subsidy of just over 30,000 riel (approximately $7.50 USD).
