Small Vessel Trips Suspended in Biliran Due to Southwest Monsoon

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has suspended the operations of small vessels on routes linking the island province of Biliran after rough sea conditions, triggered by the southwest monsoon (habagat), threatened maritime safety. The suspension, which took effect at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, covers all vessels and watercraft with a gross tonnage of 15 tons and below. According to the PCG Biliran Station, the measure was taken to prioritize the safety of passengers and crew due to the potential risks posed by the turbulent seas. Biliran Island, located in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, relies heavily on maritime transport for connectivity to the mainland. The suspension of small vessel operations is expected to have a direct impact on the daily lives of islanders, the transport of goods, and the local economy. The southwest monsoon typically brings the rainy season to the Philippines from June to October, often causing adverse sea conditions. Coastal and island communities are particularly vulnerable to disruptions in transportation networks due to weather patterns.
