Thai Transport Ministry Taps Krungthai Bank for BTS Rabbit Card EMV Transition

The Thai Ministry of Transport has announced the selection of Krungthai Bank to serve as the clearing house for the transition of the "Rabbit Card," issued by Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), to the EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) standard. This decision marks a significant step towards aligning the Rabbit Card's payment system with international standards. The transition is expected to involve detailed negotiations with BTS. Specifically, discussions will focus on the technical challenges and associated costs of switching from the existing card system to the EMV standard. The government plans to allocate a compensation budget of up to 5 billion baht to facilitate a smooth transition process. This budget aims to alleviate BTS's financial burden during the transition and support investments aimed at improving the convenience of public transportation. The Rabbit Card is widely used as a payment method for public transportation in Thailand, and its EMV adoption is anticipated to contribute to a more secure and efficient payment environment. Compliance with international payment standards holds significant importance in modernizing Thailand's digital payment infrastructure.
