New Army Unit Deployment in Palawan Considered for WPS Defense

MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is considering the deployment of a new Army unit in Palawan to bolster the protection of the country’s sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). The plan is part of the AFP's Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC) and aims to support ongoing efforts to safeguard the WPS. A study is currently underway, evaluating not only troop deployment but also the potential placement of mechanized and artillery divisions. Army chief Lt. Gen. Donald Gumiran stated, "This is in accordance with the intention of the Department of National Defense. We will be expanding the coverage of the Army for a long-term goal, not just in Palawan." He further confirmed coordination with relevant agencies such as the Philippine Air Force, Philippine Navy, and the head of the Western Command. Gumiran indicated that the study is focused on identifying the most critical areas for armor and artillery assets, and if Palawan is determined to be the optimal location, the deployment will proceed. He clarified that the current plan specifically covers troop or unit deployment in Palawan and does not extend to other areas within the Kalayaan Island Group in the WPS. This development comes as the Philippines intensifies its focus on enhancing its defense capabilities amidst increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea. Palawan's strategic location, situated between the Philippine mainland and the disputed waters, makes it a crucial area for national security.
