Depok Landfill Fire: Government Response Fails to Address Root Waste Issues?
A fire at the Cipayung landfill in Depok City has exposed vulnerabilities in waste management. While the government acted swiftly to extinguish the blaze, a fundamental solution to the waste problem remains elusive. A large fire broke out at the Cipayung landfill (TPA) in Depok City, West Java, on the evening of July 16th. Around 7:30 PM, Tamil, 45, who lives near the landfill, witnessed flames rising from the garbage piles, reaching a height of two meters. She immediately reported the fire, and security guards and truck drivers worked to extinguish it before the fire department arrived. According to Reni Siti Nuraeni, Head of the Depok City Environmental and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), the fire was extinguished within approximately 30-45 minutes, but an area of about 20-25 square meters was burned. Fortunately, there were no human casualties, and only two city-owned garbage trucks sustained heat damage. The following day, July 17th, the scene showed blackened, burnt garbage piles several meters high. Even after the fire, garbage trucks were seen queuing outside the landfill gate, waiting to dispose of waste. Five excavators were in operation, and amidst the heavy machinery, many individuals were seen sorting recyclable materials for economic value. This incident has once again highlighted the challenges of waste management in Indonesia, particularly the increasing volume of waste in urban areas and the inadequacy of processing infrastructure. While the government responded swiftly to the fire, further details are awaited regarding the investigation into the cause, preventive measures, and concrete plans for addressing the fundamental waste problem.
