Angkor Wat North Terrace Section Undergoing 20-Meter Restoration

Restoration and structural reinforcement work on a 20-meter section of the north terrace of Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Cambodia, is underway under the guidance of expert teams. This marks the ninth phase of a large-scale terrace restoration project that began in 2013. According to Ms. Nong Boravy, an archaeologist with the APSARA National Authority, the project is implemented in stages, with approximately 20 meters repaired annually. As of 2026, a total of 183 meters have been completed or are in progress. The ninth phase of restoration commenced in mid-2026 and is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Ms. Boravy explained that the terrace's damage is primarily due to aging, lack of maintenance during past conflicts, and the roots of large trees growing along the terrace, which have pushed and separated the stones from their original form. This has led to the deterioration of the lower foundations and the collapse of upper stone elements, resulting in the loss of the original structure. The restoration efforts involve dismantling and repairing stones, compacting soil, and reconstructing the stones to their original configuration. The terrace's lower section comprises seven tiers of laterite stone, while the upper section uses three tiers of sandstone. Ms. Boravy expressed optimism that the completed restoration will further enhance the aesthetic appeal of the Angkor Wat terrace, attract more tourists, and provide visitors with greater opportunities to enjoy the scenery and take photographs.
