Construction Worker Suffers Severe Injuries After Fall in Phnom Penh

A construction worker has suffered severe injuries after falling from scaffolding while working on a house in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The incident occurred at approximately 8:58 AM on July 20, 2026, on a concrete road in Sre Chumrou village, Cham Chao II commune, Posen Chey district. The victim, identified as Phan Sophath, a 42-year-old male from Kok Khmum commune, Thma Koul district, Battambang province, sustained injuries to his waist and a head laceration. According to sources, Sophath had climbed onto the scaffolding to work on the third floor of a house under construction. It is believed that he lost his footing due to carelessness and fell to the ground. Following the accident, local residents requested assistance from the 711th Emergency Rescue Unit of the 70th Infantry Division. An ambulance from the unit promptly transported Sophath to Preah Kosamak Hospital. As Cambodia continues to experience a construction boom driven by rapid economic development, ensuring the safety of workers remains a significant challenge. Deficiencies in safety education and protective measures, particularly for unskilled and low-wage laborers, have been pointed out, leading to a continuous stream of similar accidents.
