Some ASEAN countries have tolerated discriminatory treatment towards Myanmar, says Min Aung Hlaing

July 31 Min Aung Hlaing, the interim president of Myanmar, said that some ASEAN countries have discriminated against Myanmar for the past five years, but they have tolerated it. Min Aung Hlaing, the interim president, made this statement during his 100-day national address on the state of the country, which was held today (July 31) by the partially civilian military junta. "Although some ASEAN countries have had attitudes and discriminatory treatment towards Myanmar over the past five years, we have patiently cooperated in accordance with the duties of an ASEAN member state. "We will respond to non-constructive discriminatory treatments on a case-by-case basis as required by the state," he said. Furthermore, military leader Min Aung Hlaing said that the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar is not a consensus of ASEAN countries but merely an addendum to the statement of the ASEAN Chair. He stated that Myanmar will use its own methods to improve relations with ASEAN countries, and that Myanmar's foreign policy adheres to an independent, active, and non-aligned policy.
