Samar Fisherman Returns Caught Sea Turtles to Authorities

TACLOBAN CITY — A fisherman in Samar has voluntarily turned over two green sea turtles caught in his fishing net to authorities, an act that highlights growing awareness for marine wildlife conservation in the Philippines. Rendel Amarilla, a fisherman from Rawis-Anibong, was fishing near Barangay Bayawan on August 31, around 4:20 p.m., when he accidentally caught two green sea turtles in his net. Recognizing the protected status of the species, Amarilla immediately reported the incident to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Officials from BFAR and DENR responded to the scene, assessed the condition of the turtles, and subsequently released them back into the sea in a safe offshore location. BFAR officials commended Amarilla for his "exemplary" action, emphasizing the importance of protecting endangered species within marine protected areas. Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are listed as endangered, and their conservation is crucial for maintaining the Philippines' rich marine biodiversity.
