Tarique Rahman's Youth Outreach: Beyond Election Strategy?

Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tarique Rahman continues to engage with the youth post-election, raising questions about whether his approach extends beyond a mere election strategy. Upon his return from 17 years in exile on December 25, 2025, Tarique Rahman, as the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), placed young people at the center of politics. Following the July 2024 mass uprising, the youth demographic emerged as a significant political force, poised to influence the choice of the next government. Recognizing this, Rahman integrated youth into the party's policy plans and electoral manifesto, organizing numerous youth-exclusive events during the campaign period. On January 22, 2026, the official start of the parliamentary election campaign, Rahman attended an event in Sylhet titled "The Plan: Youth Policy Talk with Tarique Rahman," engaging directly with hundreds of students. Similar events were later held in Chattogram. The BNP's election manifesto included numerous pledges for the youth. The party committed to creating 10 million new jobs within five years by attracting domestic and foreign investment. Prime Minister Rahman has emphasized Bangladesh's openness to investment during visits to Malaysia and China, meeting with executives of leading business organizations. While law and order have improved and the political environment has stabilized since the government took office, the employment pledge faces structural constraints. Notably, an unreliable energy supply has hindered the production start-up of numerous industrial units. Without improvements in energy security and infrastructure, investment-driven job creation will remain challenging. Other commitments include facilitating the departure of 10 million workers abroad, introducing unemployment benefits, promoting youth participation in national development, offering freelancing and outsourcing training at higher education institutions, and providing small office spaces for young entrepreneurs in IT parks. The extent to which these promises will be fulfilled remains to be seen. As the government approaches its first six months in office, questions are being raised: "Were the election-time promises and the BNP leadership's attempts to connect with the youth merely strategies to secure votes?" This question is amplified by recent road blockades across the country by Gen Z students preparing for their Higher Secondary Certificate examinations. However, the BNP's top leader has continued to engage with the youth post-election. Before taking office, he prioritized dialogue over one-way speeches. While this approach has become more challenging after assuming the premiership, he has occasionally invited content creators, athletes, and entrepreneurs to his office to discuss their challenges and concerns. The BNP government has launched "Notun Kuri Sports," a nationwide program to identify talented children and adolescents, transformed the parliament complex into an open civic education platform for students, and allocated 5 billion taka for a startup fund. Emphasis is also being placed on climate action and developing the younger generation, with tree-planting and canal excavation programs underway. Concurrently, technical education and compulsory foreign language learning are being prioritized. Ultimately, the BNP's credibility with Bangladesh's youth will hinge not on the number of meetings and programs, but on the government's ability to deliver jobs, fair recruitment, and meaningful participation in state-building. The youth demographic, representing over one-third of Bangladesh's electorate, played a decisive role in the BNP's electoral victory and now expects the fulfillment of promises such as employment opportunities.
