Italian Woman Finds Love and a New Life on Vietnam's Ha Giang Loop

Karin Di Paola, a 21-year-old Italian traveler, arrived in northern Vietnam's Ha Giang province in April 2025 with a plan to ride the famous Ha Giang Loop and continue her journey. However, her trip took an unexpected turn when she fell ill at her homestay. The young owner, Lục Thế Khải, 26, provided her with dedicated care. This chance encounter blossomed into a relationship, leading Karin to abandon her original plans and decide to stay in Vietnam to build a life with Khải. Currently, Karin and Khải live together in Ha Giang. Khải is a member of the Giáy ethnic community. The couple are focused on developing their homestay business, creating online content about their relationship and Vietnamese life, and saving for their wedding. Karin, originally from Italy's Veneto region, had long been drawn to Vietnam, influenced by her mother's volunteer work there in the 1990s. Ha Giang, known for its dramatic karst landscapes and winding roads, was a natural destination for her love of mountains. Upon arrival in April 2025, Karin booked a one-night stay at a family-run homestay near Ha Giang city center. On her first afternoon, she asked Khải, who had recently returned from Hanoi to start a business, about the distance to the city center. Khải, with limited English, struggled to respond verbally but held up five fingers. "He was shy but very cute," Karin recalls. Khải was equally intrigued by her. They began using a translation app to communicate. That evening, Khải invited Karin to try bánh cuốn, a popular Vietnamese steamed rice roll dish, before she was scheduled to check out the next morning. When Khải returned to the homestay the following afternoon, he was surprised to find Karin still there. She had developed severe stomach pain and canceled her planned trip. Khải felt responsible, wondering if the previous night's meal had caused her illness, and stayed close by, checking on her and providing food and care as she recovered. Once Karin felt better, Khải took her on a tour of Ha Giang to compensate for the trip she had missed. The two spent hours discussing their families, work, and lives in Vietnam and Italy. The care she received from Khải deeply affected Karin. Soon after, they shared their first kiss and acknowledged their mutual feelings, understanding that their time together might initially be limited. However, their story continued. About a week after meeting Khải, Karin traveled to the nearby Cao Bang province. She invited Khải to join her, but he declined. As soon as Karin's bus departed, Khải realized he had made a mistake. Back at the homestay, he found it difficult to concentrate on work, constantly thinking about her. Meanwhile, Karin found herself thinking of Khải while traveling in Cao Bang. After five days apart, she messaged him, asking, "Should I come back?" Khải replied that his heart had already decided she was the woman he wanted to spend his life with. Karin returned to Ha Giang, deciding to stay in Vietnam and continue their relationship. Khải introduced Karin to his relatives and friends and showed her familiar places around Ha Giang. Over the following year, the couple traveled to various parts of Vietnam together. Karin also helped Khải improve his English, boosting his confidence in communicating with international guests at the homestay. Their relationship faced challenges, particularly navigating differences in affection expression between Vietnamese and Italian cultures. Karin noted that Italians often communicate feelings directly through words, while Vietnamese may show affection through practical acts of care. Initially, she struggled to understand Khải's quieter expressions of affection. This changed during a difficult period earlier this year when Karin experienced a family loss. Khải stayed by her side and cared for her, mirroring the support he offered when they first met. This experience helped Karin see him as a dependable source of support and deepened her understanding of affection expressed through actions. Both families have welcomed their relationship. Khải's parents have been open and affectionate towards Karin. In Italy, Karin's mother was initially concerned but respected her daughter's choice. In June this year, Karin's parents visited Vietnam to meet Khải for the first time. "At first, Khải was a little shy, but I realized that he was very open, thoughtful and kind," said Karin's mother. After returning to Italy, they were already asking when they could visit Vietnam again. Karin now lives with Khải in Ha Giang, where they are working together to develop the family homestay and save for their wedding. They have also begun creating digital content about their relationship, daily life in Ha Giang, and the cultural differences they experience as an Italian-Vietnamese couple. They occasionally travel to Hanoi, where Karin continues her studies and seeks new creative ideas for their content. For Karin, her trip to explore one of Vietnam's most famous motorcycle routes has become something much more significant. She came to Ha Giang for the mountains and the landscapes she had seen in photographs. She stayed because of the person she met there. Khải remains grateful for her decision to return.
