Phu Quoc International Airport Completes Second 3,300m Runway, Prepares for Calibration Flights

Phu Quoc International Airport, located on the southern resort island of Phu Quoc, has completed the construction of its second runway, measuring 3,300 meters in length. This is part of a key project to prepare for the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit to be held on the island. The expansion is expected to significantly enhance the airport's operational capacity, enabling the expansion of international flights and the operation of larger aircraft in the future. The expansion project is being undertaken with remarkable speed by Sun Group, a major real estate developer. Local media reports describe the airport's expansion as proceeding at a "godspeed" pace, aiming for operations that meet international standards akin to Singapore's Changi International Airport. Phu Quoc Airport is also promoting a new "destination airport" model, striving for 5-star service standards. The construction of a VIP terminal is also underway, with its impressive architectural design drawing attention. Construction work continued even during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, demonstrating a strong commitment to the project's early completion. Phu Quoc International Airport will strengthen its role as the gateway connecting Phu Quoc Island, known as the "Pearl Island," with the rest of the world. Sun Phu Quoc Airways has already welcomed the first of its eight Airbus A321NX aircraft, signaling preparations for future network expansion. This runway expansion represents a significant step for Vietnam as it seeks to elevate its status as a host for international events and further develop its tourism industry and economy. In particular, in its relationship with China, Vietnam is pursuing a strategy of deepening international cooperation while balancing economic development and security, and such infrastructure investments can be seen as part of this broader strategy.
