Cambodian Information Minister Urges Media's Role in Combating Cyber Fraud

Minister of Information of Cambodia, Net Pheaktra, stated that the media plays a crucial role in combating cyber fraud during an international conference on combating cyber fraud held in Phnom Penh on September 23, 2026. He emphasized that accurate and timely information dissemination is essential for citizens to be aware of risks, recognize warning signs, and protect themselves from scams. Pheaktra explained that proper dissemination of information helps citizens be cautious of job advertisements offering unusually high salaries, invitations for online investments, and requests for personal or financial information. He encouraged journalists to continue reporting on these issues based on verified information, highlighting the impact on victims and the developments in law enforcement. Furthermore, the Ministry of Information will continue to promote information literacy to ensure citizens can use digital technology safely. The minister also mentioned that journalists visited former online scam compounds in Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, and Kandal provinces from September 21 to 22, 2026. Seventy-nine national and international journalists from 39 media outlets visited a casino in Bavet city, Svay Rieng province, after inspecting the former scam compound in Kamchay Mear district, Prey Veng province. In Kandal province, journalists also visited areas like Chrey Thom and Sampeou Lun, which are associated with cybercrime. In total, approximately 300 national and international journalists participated in these visits to witness the areas used for technological crimes firsthand.
