72 Years On, Geneva Accords Offer Enduring Lessons for Vietnam's Nation-Building

Seventy-two years have passed since the signing of the Geneva Accords, yet the valuable lessons learned from the process of negotiation, signing, and implementation of this agreement remain as relevant as ever for Vietnam's nation-building and development today. Especially as Vietnam enters an era of national advancement, these experiences continue to serve as a crucial guide. Vietnam has deeply studied the lessons from the Geneva Accords to establish its position in the international community and maintain peace and independence. While the accords led to the end of the First Indochina War and the temporary division of Vietnam into North and South, they also underscored the importance of pursuing national interests within an international framework and seeking diplomatic solutions. Modern Vietnam applies the lessons learned from these accords to its foreign policy, economic development, and maintenance of social stability. Its approach, which emphasizes cooperation with the international community while maintaining strong central authority under a one-party system, is thought to be based on the experiences gained from the Geneva Accords. In economic growth, Vietnam promotes policies aimed at sustainable development by expanding international partnerships, an application of lessons learned from past experiences. In particular, Vietnam has recently focused on strengthening relations with European countries. Its presence at the 152nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, the signing of a green strategic partnership with Norway, the building of relations with Turkey, the opening of new ties with Slovakia, and the expansion of cooperation with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) can be seen as modern manifestations of the diplomatic approach highlighted by the Geneva Accords.
