Cambodia to Provide Cash Assistance to Vulnerable Families Amidst Rising Fuel Prices

The Cambodian government has decided to implement a cash assistance program for poor and vulnerable families to alleviate the impact of rising fuel prices on citizens' livelihoods. Spearheaded by Prime Minister Hun Manet, this measure aims to support those facing the pressures of increased oil and fuel costs amidst the multiple crises Cambodia is currently experiencing. The cash transfer program will commence on September 25, 2026, and will be disbursed in four installments: September 25, October 16, November 16, and December 16. This assistance will be provided in addition to existing social welfare benefits. The amount of assistance varies by region. In the capital city of Phnom Penh, each household will receive an additional 60,000 Riel (approximately $15 USD), with each family member receiving an extra 5,000 Riel (approximately $1.25 USD). For families residing in urban areas outside Phnom Penh, the assistance will be 48,000 Riel per household and 5,000 Riel per member. In rural areas, households will receive 40,000 Riel, with an additional 5,000 Riel for each family member. This program is expected to benefit approximately 4.6 million poor and vulnerable individuals nationwide, particularly those holding "Equity Cards" or "Vulnerability Cards." The government acknowledges the compound impacts of global trade regime changes, rising geopolitical tensions, conflicts, the Middle East situation, and other global crises on Cambodia. In the past, the government has implemented cash transfer and social assistance programs during various crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, for flood-affected households, those under inflationary pressure, and refugees from border conflicts.
