Vietnam and the Philippines have opened a new chapter of cooperation by elevating their bilateral relations to an "Enhanced Strategic Partnership" on the occasion of their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. At a commemorative event held in Hanoi on July 10, Mr. Phan Anh Son, Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO), and Mr. Francisco Noel R. Fernandez III, Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam, reviewed the progress of the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties on July 12, 1976, bilateral relations have deepened mutual understanding, leading to the establishment of a Strategic Partnership in 2015. Most recently, the visit of General Secretary and President To Lam of Vietnam to the Philippines from May 31 to June 1, 2026, marked a new development, upgrading the relationship to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. Ambassador Fernandez stated that the determination to strengthen relations will promote cooperation in defense, maritime affairs, economy, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. In the defense sector, a Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation has been signed, and the coast guards of both countries are contributing to ensuring peace and security at sea. In terms of trade and investment, the two countries aim to surpass the bilateral trade turnover of US$7.8 billion in 2025, targeting over US$10 billion. The Philippines prioritizes rice imports from Vietnam, and Vietnamese businesses are encouraged to invest in the Philippines. Philippine companies are investing in Vietnam in sectors such as food processing, transport infrastructure, water treatment, education, and pharmaceuticals. Ambassador Francisco Noel R. Fernandez III noted that both Vietnam and the Philippines are expected to be classified by the World Bank as upper-middle-income economies from July 2026, reflecting the results of their macroeconomic management and economic reforms. In the tourism sector, the Vietnam-Philippines Tourism Cooperation Program for 2026-2029, along with increased air connectivity, is expected to facilitate travel and boost exchanges between the two countries.
