Provisional Government Responds to ASEAN, Stating It Will Only Act on ASEAN Five-Point Consensus According to Provisional Parliament's Decision

At the informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 12, the provisional government-appointed Foreign Minister U Tin Swe Myint responded that the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus, established to resolve the Myanmar issue, will only be implemented in accordance with the decisions of the Provisional Parliament, according to Ayeyarwaddy Times on July 13. Provisional Government Minister U Tin Swe Myint also added during the meeting that it is necessary to understand the complex political situation in Myanmar. "Since the important proposal was approved and decided by the Provisional Parliament on July 9, the elected government has a responsibility to implement it. It is also necessary to understand Myanmar's complex political situation," he stated, as mentioned in a statement from the provisional government. Furthermore, he urged for positive perspectives that align with Myanmar's actual ground situation, expressing hope that they will soon regain their original role and rights within ASEAN, and that they will cooperate with ASEAN as much as possible. #Provisional Parliament's Objection to ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus The ASEAN Five-Point Consensus is inconsistent with the current situation, interferes in Myanmar's internal affairs, and undermines equality, thus it has been rejected and approved by the Provisional Parliament without objection, with a decision to amend and review it as necessary. This important proposal was initially submitted by Dr. Nanda Hla Myint, a Member of Parliament from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) who won the Kalaw constituency in the 2025 provisional elections. It was submitted with accusations that the provisional president has not been allowed to attend ASEAN summits due to the Five-Point Consensus. The proposal was supported and debated among provisional MPs, with U Hla Swe, a USDP MP from the Pobbathiri constituency, criticizing that the Philippines, the ASEAN rotating chair that has excluded them, should withdraw from ASEAN. #ASEAN's Response After the military coup, the last ASEAN summit attended by the military chief and provisional president Min Aung Hlaing was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, after which the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus was established. The current meeting in Bangkok marks the first informal contact between the provisional government-appointed foreign minister and ASEAN. However, despite the provisional government not strictly adhering to ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus and raising objections and criticisms like this, ASEAN has responded that it will firmly uphold the Five-Point Consensus.
