Hun Sen, EU Envoy Discuss Myanmar Crisis and Cambodia-Thailand Border

PHNOM PENH, Sept 25, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodian Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen and European Union Ambassador Igor Driesmans have exchanged views on regional developments, including the situation in Myanmar and Cambodia’s border dispute with Thailand, officials said Friday. Senate spokesman Chea Thyrith said Samdech Techo met Driesmans, who also serves as the EU Special Envoy for Myanmar, at the Senate’s Solidarity Palace on September 24. The meeting focused on regional and international issues of mutual concern. Samdech Techo Hun Sen welcomed Driesmans and his delegation, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to discuss matters of shared interest. Driesmans thanked Samdech Techo for receiving him and highlighted the EU’s contributions to Cambodia, particularly in mine clearance. Hun Sen in turn expressed gratitude for the EU’s continued support in that area. According to the EU Delegation to Cambodia, the talks notably addressed the ongoing crisis in Myanmar and the Cambodia–Thailand border situation, where tensions remain despite a ceasefire agreement. Driesmans’ dual role as ambassador and special envoy added a regional dimension to the discussion. The meeting underscored Cambodia’s engagement with international partners on regional security and cooperation, while maintaining its bilateral relationship with the EU. Officials said the exchange reflected Phnom Penh’s efforts to balance domestic priorities with broader regional challenges. Samdech Techo Hun Sen has repeatedly emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful resolution of disputes and adherence to international law, while the EU has sought to play a constructive role in supporting stability in Southeast Asia.
