Senate Approves Magna Carta for Barangay Health Workers

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate has approved on third and final reading the proposed Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers (Senate Bill No. 1905). This landmark legislation aims to enhance the status and welfare of Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), who are crucial frontline healthcare providers in local communities. The bill, principally authored by Sen. JV Ejercito and primarily sponsored by Sen. Risa Hontiveros, seeks to address the challenges faced by BHWs and ensure they receive adequate compensation, training, social security benefits, and opportunities for career development commensurate with their vital contributions. For years, BHWs have served their communities, often on a volunteer basis or with minimal pay, playing a significant role in health promotion and disease prevention. However, their efforts have frequently lacked sufficient legal and economic recognition.
