Cambodia Pledges Enhanced Parliamentary Role in Addressing Demographic Shifts at AFPPD Conference
A Cambodian parliamentary delegation emphasized strengthening the role of the legislature in addressing demographic changes at the AFPPD annual conference in Malaysia. Discussions focused on achieving Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality, youth and elder empowerment, and climate change response.
The Cambodian Parliament participated in the annual conference of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on September 3, 2026. The delegation pledged to strengthen the role of parliament in addressing demographic shifts. Under the high permission of Samdech Mahathir Parliament Speaker Khuon Sudary, the delegation, led by Lok Chumteav Lok Kheng, Chairperson of the 8th Commission and Standing Vice President of the AFPPD Cambodia Chapter, attended the conference themed 'Parliamentary Leadership for the Future.' According to sources from the National Assembly, Cambodia's participation in this regional forum reflects its active commitment to enhancing the legislative body's role in tackling demographic crises and promoting inclusive and sustainable development. The conference brought together over 100 parliamentarians from 22 countries across the Asia-Pacific and Africa. During the conference, the Cambodian delegation engaged in discussions and exchanged views on improving the policy environment and legal mechanisms to support the implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, as well as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The conference as a whole placed significant emphasis on AFPPD's four key strategic pillars: Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment; Investing in Youth Energy and Potential; Promoting Active Aging; and Responding to Climate Change. The opening ceremony was warmly welcomed by distinguished international figures, including His Excellency Dato Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, President of the Senate of Malaysia; His Excellency Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Human Resources of Malaysia; Ms. Kamikawa Yoko, Member of Parliament of Japan and President of AFPPD; and Mr. Pio Smith, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director for Programme at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
