Cambodia Urges UN to Strengthen Peaceful Conflict Resolution and Adherence to International Law

Cambodia has reiterated its call for a renewed global commitment to strengthening peaceful conflict resolution and adherence to international law during an open debate at the United Nations Security Council. The appeal was made by H.E. Keo Chhea, Permanent Representative of Cambodia to the UN, during the High-Level Open Debate on "Strengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes: Follow-up to Security Council Resolution 2788 (2025)" held on July 23, 2026, in New York, USA. H.E. Keo Chhea recalled that H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, reaffirmed Cambodia's unwavering commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law in his statement to the Security Council in May 2026. The Ambassador highlighted four priorities: 1. Strengthening the role of the UN in preventive diplomacy. 2. Ensuring that disputes are resolved through peaceful means and compliance with International Court of Justice decisions. 3. Enhancing the unity and impartiality of the Council. 4. Addressing the humanitarian impact of Cambodia's ongoing border disputes, which have resulted in over 20,000 civilians remaining displaced. Concurrently, H.E. the Ambassador emphasized, "Borders and sovereignty must not be altered by force or by creating new de facto situations on the ground."
