26-Year-Old Man Dies Trapped in Thick Smoke from Forest Fire in Ketapang

A 26-year-old man has died after becoming trapped in thick smoke and flames from a forest and land fire (karhutla) in Ketapang, West Kalimantan. The victim, identified as Taufik Hidayat, was found with his body severely burned at the scene of the fire, which occurred along the Sungai Pelang-Tumbang Titi main road in Pelang Village, Matan Hilir Selatan District. "The victim was 26 years old, born in 2000," said Sigunari, the Chief of Police for Matan Hilir Selatan, to reporters on Saturday (8/5/2026). The incident occurred on Tuesday evening (8/4). The victim was a resident of Sungai Besar Village, Matan Hilir Selatan District. Initial reports suggest that Taufik was returning home from work when he decided to cross the road, which was then enveloped in dense smoke from the karhutla. It is suspected that Taufik lost his way due to the extremely limited visibility. A joint team comprising the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Karhutla Task Force, SAR, and firefighters initiated a search after the victim was reported missing. Following his discovery, the victim's body was evacuated to a hospital in Ketapang Regency for further handling. Yunifar Purwanto, the Head of the Ketapang Regency BPBD, stated that his agency received a report of a fatality from the officers managing the fire at the location. "What is clear is that we received information about one fatality. Saudara Taufik was just returning from work, so perhaps he wanted to get home quickly in that situation of thick smoke," Yunifar said. In addition to claiming Taufik's life, the fire also destroyed a motorcycle, believed to be the one the victim was riding when he passed through the area. The exact cause of the fire and the complete chronology of the event that led to Taufik's death are still under investigation by the authorities. Forest fires are a recurring problem in Indonesia, especially during the dry season, causing significant haze and impacting air quality across the region. These fires are often linked to land clearing for agricultural purposes, including palm oil plantations.
