Lao Cai Province Holds Dialogue with Residents Over Industrial Park Project

In Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province, northern Vietnam, the Standing Committee of the district People's Committee held a dialogue on the evening of September 15 with residents whose land is affected by the Ban Qua Industrial Park construction project. During the meeting, residents directly raised concerns regarding land acquisition, compensation, resettlement, and livelihood restoration after relinquishing their land, engaging in direct exchanges with local government authorities. Lao Cai province has been prioritizing industrial park development in recent years to accelerate economic growth. The province is particularly proactive in establishing "green industrial parks" aimed at sustainable development, with several industrial parks already planned or under construction within the province. The Ban Qua Industrial Park is seen as part of this development strategy. However, land acquisition and resident livelihood restoration are persistent challenges in large-scale development projects. The local authorities' initiative to engage in direct dialogue with residents can be seen as an attempt to address these issues. Under Vietnam's one-party system, economic growth is a key priority, driving foreign investment attraction and infrastructure development. Industrial park development forms a core part of this policy, contributing to job creation and economic revitalization in many regions. Conversely, land acquisition, environmental issues, and the protection of residents' rights associated with development often create friction within local communities. This dialogue in Lao Cai province could serve as a test case for Vietnam's efforts to balance economic development with social harmony.
