UN welcomes Aung San Suu Kyi meeting with Red Cross

The United Nations has welcomed the meeting between Myanmar's democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters that the UN Secretary-General is calling for the unconditional and swift release of all arbitrarily detained individuals to move towards a credible and transparent political process. He added that the UN Secretary-General stressed the importance of continued dialogue between the UN and all stakeholders in Myanmar to find a peaceful solution. The ICRC has stated that the meeting took place in Naypyidaw and was conducted according to procedures, which the military junta has also confirmed. Aung San Suu Kyi, 81, has been detained since the 2021 military coup, and the junta has said she was moved to house arrest in April, but concerns have been raised about her health and living conditions. Former military leader and appointed President Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to visit Thailand this week. Min Aung Hlaing is expected to meet with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and attend an economic forum. Having already visited India and China this year, Min Aung Hlaing appears to be seeking to further consolidate his political influence in international relations.
