Cambodia to Modernize Meteorological Information System with French International Agency

Cambodia's Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology is moving forward with plans to modernize its national meteorological information system in collaboration with France's Meteo-France International (MFI). On September 23, 2026, Minister Thao Cheththa met with David BOUSIGUE, MFI's Regional Director, to discuss this cooperation. MFI, headquartered in Toulouse, France, is an international agency that has provided long-term technical support to Cambodia's Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, particularly its Department of Meteorology, in both hardware and software aspects of the meteorological information system. This partnership has contributed to enhancing Cambodia's meteorological observation capabilities. According to the Minister, the Cambodian meteorological information system has been operational since 2011. However, parts of the system, including hardware, server infrastructure, and software, have become outdated, potentially posing future operational challenges. Consequently, the Minister requested MFI to conduct further technical assessments for the modernization of the existing meteorological information system. This modernization initiative is expected to lead to improved accuracy in weather forecasting in Cambodia, enhanced early warning capabilities for extreme weather events, and ultimately, better risk management in related sectors such as agriculture and infrastructure development. Strengthening the capacity to respond to increasingly frequent extreme weather events is particularly crucial for the stability of people's lives.
