Jakarta Correctional Office Promises Strict Sanctions for Proven Extortion Allegations

JAKARTA - The Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kanwil Ditjenpas) for the Special Region of Jakarta responded to reports of alleged extortion (pungli) of up to Rp. 200 million in the prison and detention center environment in Jakarta. Through the Head of Internal Care, Security, and Compliance as well as spokesperson for the Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Prisons, Edi Sigit Budiman, the Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Prisons ensures that supervision of the implementation of the duties and functions of the penitentiary continues to be strengthened. "This step is part of efforts to ensure that all levels of work in accordance with the provisions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)," Edi told reporters, Wednesday (2/10/2026). Edi Sigit Budiman, said his party had taken a number of strategic steps in dealing with various problems in the correctional environment. According to Edi, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has issued directives that include strengthening the professionalism, loyalty, discipline, integrity, and accountability of employees. "Every problem must be resolved quickly, accurately, thoroughly, and according to authority," said Edi, quoting the leadership's instructions conveyed in the strategic steps of the DKI Jakarta Directorate General of Tourism. Edi explained that supervision was carried out in stages. The Regional Office also formed an inspection or clarification team, carried out surprise inspections (sidak) and raids, carried out monitoring and evaluation of the UPT, and verified information before providing a response. This step is important in responding to information and reports regarding alleged violations in prisons and detention centers. "The Regional Office continues to carry out supervision and inspections as part of efforts to ensure that the implementation of duties is carried out in accordance with the rules," said the spokesperson for the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Tourism and Creative Economy of DKI Jakarta. In addition to supervision, human resource strengthening is carried out through briefing on tasks and functions, improving integrity, discipline, and professionalism. Employee handling is also carried out according to the results and needs of the examination. At the UPT level, the arrangement of inmates is carried out according to the needs of handling and the conditions of each work unit. The Directorate General of Tourism and Creative Economy for DKI Jakarta also strengthened public communication by monitoring narratives on social media, improving public relations functions, and publicizing improvement steps and positive performance. To strengthen transparency, the complaint channel at the Regional Office and UPT continues to be optimized. The Regional Office also opened the "Kakanwil Mendengarkan" channel as a means of conveying aspirations and reporting from the community. Edi emphasized that all these steps are part of the commitment of the Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to increase transparency, responsiveness, supervision, and the quality of correctional services. Not only that, he continued, the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Transportation of DKI Jakarta will not play around with rogue officers. "If the community has strong evidence, please report it, and we will take action against all officers involved. The penalty can be a reprimand, warning, up to dismissal," he concluded.
