Thailand Tightens Immigration Procedures with New Fingerprint Rule for Foreign Nationals

BANGKOK – Foreign nationals living in or moving to Thailand are facing a major update to local immigration procedures. The nation’s Criminal Records Division has officially tightened the rules for background screenings. Under the updated guidelines, criminal record checks for nine specific application categories must now be conducted using fingerprints. A simple name-based search is no longer sufficient for these applications. The new fingerprint registration mandate is designed to curb illegal stays and criminal activities within the Kingdom. The affected categories include those with significant ties to Thai society, such as applications for long-term visas, renewals of work permits, and requests for permanent residency. The objective is to prevent fraudulent entry and residency through the use of false names or impersonation, thereby enhancing national security. While this policy is not expected to directly impact foreign tourists visiting Thailand, it may introduce additional procedural complexities and increase the time required for foreigners residing in Thailand or those planning long-term stays.
