UK Sends 12 Cambodian Scholars for Skills Development

Twelve Cambodian scholars are set to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom during the 2026–2027 academic year, as part of a UK government initiative aimed at developing specialized skills crucial for Cambodia's progress. The program focuses on fields vital for the nation's digital transformation, sustainable development, financial sector innovation, and public health improvements. Nine scholars have been awarded the UK government's prestigious Chevening Scholarships, while three others received the ASEAN-UK Women in STEM Scholarships. The selected fields of study include financial technology (fintech), cybersecurity, public health, environmental policy, education, entrepreneurship, and sustainability, reflecting growing demand in Cambodia for these specialized areas. A pre-departure reception was hosted by the British Embassy in Phnom Penh at the British Ambassador’s Residence on September 4, bringing together the scholars, their families, and representatives from Cambodia's Ministry of Education, scholarship sponsors, and Chevening alumni. British Ambassador to Cambodia Dominic Williams noted that this was his final Chevening farewell event during his tenure, highlighting the significant personal connection he and his wife have developed with the Cambodian Chevening community. The Chevening Scholarships are awarded to candidates demonstrating strong academic backgrounds and leadership potential, funded by the UK government. The ASEAN-UK Women in STEM Scholarships specifically aim to increase opportunities for women from Southeast Asia in STEM postgraduate studies. This cohort is expected to bolster Cambodia's international talent pool and enhance expertise across key sectors such as technology, finance, education, health, and environmental management, which are increasingly important for the country's competitiveness. Upon completing their one-year master's programs in the UK, the scholars are anticipated to return to Cambodia and apply their acquired knowledge and international networks to contribute to national development.
