South Korea Pledges Continued Support for Cambodian Children's Future as a 'True Friend'

The Republic of Korea will continue to stand with Cambodia as a true friend, supporting Cambodian children to grow up healthy and build a bright future for national development. This was affirmed by Mr. Kim Woo-chul, Head of Delegation and Second Secretary for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, during his visit to inspect various Korean aid projects at the National Pediatric Hospital on the morning of July 16, 2026. Mr. Kim further stated that the Republic of Korea and Cambodia have built a strong and trustworthy partnership in the health sector for over 20 years. The National Pediatric Hospital is a leading public institution in Cambodia for child healthcare. Since supporting the construction of the first hospital building in 2005, Korea has continued its partnership through this third phase of development projects, aiming to transform the hospital into a leading pediatric hospital in Southeast Asia. He added that the new pediatric building is a modern, five-story structure with 188 beds, specializing in high-level treatment for children, including departments for digestive diseases, respiratory diseases, and pediatric blood disorders and cancer. Upon completion in the first half of 2028, it will be capable of safely treating many severe illnesses that have been difficult to manage previously. He expressed hope that all families will think of the National Pediatric Hospital first whenever their children require medical care. Dr. Nhip Angkaboos, Director of the National Pediatric Hospital, stated that the cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the National Pediatric Hospital has become a model of international cooperation, creating long-term benefits for Cambodian children and families. Since the start of KOICA's support in 2005, their partnership has significantly contributed to strengthening hospital infrastructure, improving medical equipment, enhancing treatment services, and developing the capacity of healthcare professionals. Dr. Angkaboos continued that over the past year, they have continued to achieve significant milestones under the current project, including the implementation of the hospital's master plan, specialist training programs for their healthcare workforce, quality improvement initiatives, strengthening infection prevention and control, and preparations for the new hospital construction. He emphasized that these achievements would not have been possible without the valuable support and commitment from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, KOICA, and all Korean partners. He also expressed excitement for the next phase of their collaboration, especially the development of the new five-story modern hospital and planned capacity-building activities, which will further strengthen specialized pediatric services. This investment represents more than just a building; it symbolizes hope, innovation, and a better future for Cambodian children. Dr. Angkaboos expressed his deepest gratitude to the government of the Republic of Korea, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, KOICA, and all partners for their friendship and strong support. Their commitment has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless Cambodian children and their families.
