Statement by His Excellency Jose Ramos Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste read at the Requiem Mass for Patrick Walsh, Melbourne, 13 January 2026. Dear Annie, Mayra , Suzannah and Patricia , Although the reality of death was expected once the cruel medical diagnosis was known, I had hopes that medicine, our prayers, and God's wisdom would keep Pat in this Earth to continue God's mandate. But when the fateful day arrived, I felt disappointed by God's untimely call. God didn't need Pat there. Too many in the world need Pat's wisdom, his wise counsel. Pat Walsh - a friend whose life was inseparably linked to the defence of human rights and to the recent history of Timor-Leste. A man of conscience and principle at a time when the Timorese cause was little understood, forgotten, Pat was there, his calm demeanour, pensive, always the conscience, standing for justice, giving voice to the silenced ones, keeping international attention focused on the suffering and aspirations of our people. Solidarity was not fleeting, was constant, expressed through steadfast commitment over many decades. Following the restoration of independence, Pat continued to serve Timor-Leste with the same integrity and sense of responsibility, contributing to fundamental processes of reflection, memory, and national reconciliation. His work helped us confront the past with truth and to build the future with dignity. The recognition bestowed upon Pat Walsh by Timor-Leste reflected the deep gratitude of a nation that will never forget those who, though not Timorese by birth, chose to become so through conviction and humanity. At these painful times of mourning, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Annie, Mayra, Suzannah and Patricia, and to all other extended family members, and to all who shared this journey with Pat's rich life, a life well lived. May they find comfort in the knowledge that Pat Walsh's legacy will remain alive in the collective memory of the Timorese people. With respect, solidarity, and deep sorrow, Jose Ramos-Horta, President Timor Leste, Dili, 5 January 2026
